Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15)
That’s a hard Scripture for some, but true nonetheless – especially when you’re headed into any new territory. When the Israelites were sent somewhere, they were also usually given instructions on how they were to interact with the people that lived in that place. We’ve been given instructions as well – be in the world but not of it.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 (NLT)
We wouldn’t be warned to not copy the behavior and customs of the world if it weren’t so easy to do. It’s easy to imitate the behavior around you. Ever notice how quick you can take on a negative attitude when you’re around someone with a negative attitude? We have a tendency to blend, not stand out. But being an unabashed Jesus-follower will require standing out. Even among believers.
The bottom line is, are you prepared to stand out? Are you sure enough about what you believe to take that stand – not if – but when the time comes?
